Volunteer firefighters with Miami County Fire District No. 1 soon will have lighter-weight gear to wear while fighting grass fires.

The district received a $63,897 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to buy wild land protective gear. The number of protective suits it will be able to buy with the grant and its match of $3,363 will not be known until bids are received, district secretary Betty Town said. Each station — Fontana, Louisburg, Osawatomie, Paola and Wellsville — will receive the new gear. Each wild land protective suit includes a helmet, coat, pants and boots.

Wild land protective suits are lighter weight than regular firefighting bunker gear, Town said, so the firefighters won't get overheated and exhausted as quickly while fighting grass and brush fires.

Town credited Terry Courtney, Miami County administrative assistant, for her help in with the grant application. Miami County was one of 18,000 entities that applied for the grants.
