At least seven Raytown area students will be assisted with their higher education plans through Community-Wide Scholarship Day III, which is planned for Saturday, April 7, at Raytown High School.

The event will feature a barbecue, silent auction, grand auction, presentation of community story contest winners and entertainment.

“Our goal is to raise at least $9,000,” Howard Bell, chairman of the committee organizing event said. “We’re hoping to raise $12,000.”

A portion of the proceeds raised will come from the silent auction, which is scheduled to run from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We’re going to have a lot of fabulous things,” Bell said.

Among the items in the silent auction will be a portfolio of World War I posters, artwork, gift baskets, antiques, sports memorabilia, Scholastic Books and gift certificates for services at area businesses and meals at area restaurants.

Among the items in the grand auction will be artwork, a digital camera, an iPod, antique washstand and a two-night stay at a hotel in Branson.

Anyone looking to participate in either auction will have the opportunity to eat at the event, with the barbecue planned for 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“People will be able to have a pulled pork or brisket sandwich, with their choice of two sides n cole slaw, potato salad or baked beans, for only five dollars,” Bell said.

He expects close to 500 people to attend the barbecue.

Barbecue tickets are now available from members of the Raytown Retired Teachers and School Personnel Association and will also be available the day of the event.

For visitors just interested in dessert, there will be homemade cake, cobbler and ice cream for sale.

For visitors looking for an entertainment interlude, the Raytown Middle School Spirit Singers will be performing at 2 p.m.

After that performance will come the announcement of the communitywide story contest winners at 2:30 p.m. The top three winners will receive cash prizes.

The contest, which had a deadline of Tuesday, March 20, was open to former and current students of the Raytown School District.

The assignment was for contest entrants to write about an experience that occurred in Raytown that concerns a person, school or community event.

While hoping for additional entries late last week, Susan Landers, coordinator of the contest, said she had received contest entries from past and current students.
