New pet grooming service opens in Smithville
Existing pet boutique, Paw Barkers, adds grooming to its line of services.

Paw Barkers, in downtown Smithville, has added full-service pet grooming to its repertoire. Barker's Salon is the perfect place for the pooch in need of a day of beauty.
Store owner Judy Harness and her daughter Darcy Mitchell confessed a lifelong love of animals and added grooming service as a logical progression of their unique doggie boutique.
The prices range from around $18 to $27, depending on the weight of the dog, and their top-of-the-line spa treatment includes: full bath, teeth brushing, nail trim, face and paw pad trim, brushing and even cologne and breath spray.
“We're going to be open for grooming Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays,” Mitchell said. “We wanted to add another service for their customers.”
The store recently changed location to help accommodate and is now at 100 S. Bridge St., on the corner of Bridge and Main streets in downtown Smithville.
“The new location is great,” said Harness. “It's much bigger, and there is more room for the dogs to come in and visit us in the store. We have more room for products, like dog treats and toys. The move also allowed us to open up grooming, and we hope to open our bakery in the next few weeks as well.”
Paw Barkers' dog treats are all homemade, from human-grade ingredients, and include no preservatives.
In addition to grooming, Mitchell runs the Friends of Smithville Animal Rescue, and those lucky pups benefit from the grooming service as well even though they are not paying customers. Both Mitchell and Harness are animal lovers, and it shows in the quality of service they provide.
“I feel like they rely on us to keep them healthy and safe,” Harness said. “I like for people to enjoy having pets and their companionship and to have fun with them it's about really having fun and having a relationship.”
Harness and Mitchell recommend having a pet groomed at least once a month, depending on the length and amount of hair, and they believe proper doggie hygiene can not only help detect early signs of serious health problems but can also prevent certain health issues from arising.
“It makes them feel better when they're all fresh and clean,” Harness said. “It helps control parasites and really improves their quality of life.”
