Scooter riders from across the area will be taking to the streets Saturday, June 9, in a benefit ride for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

“We hope to have 50 riders or more,” said Melanie Gipson, a member of ScootKC, which is organizing the event.

She said this would be the first benefit ride the club had done.

Gipson said the ride would begin at 10 a.m. at the City Grounds Coffee Shop, 6200 Raytown Trafficway, Raytown.

“Registration for the ride will begin at 8:30 a.m. that morning,” she said.

Gipson said that after making stops for lunch and at attractions in the area, the ride would end that evening with a barbecue at a club member's house.

She said the route for the ride was still in the process of being finalized.

Anyone wanting to make a pledge to the ride for JDRF or needing more information can do so by visiting the club's Web site, scootkc.com.

That is where people can also find out more about the club.

Gipson said most club members rode their scooters on a regular basis when the weather was good.

She also noted how frugal the scooters were with gas.

“We get about 90 miles per gallon,” she said.

Gipson said scooters with an engine of less than 50cc output could be ridden on city streets without being licensed while those with an engine output of more than 50cc must be licensed as motorcycles.

State law also requires those in control of the scooters to have a valid driver's licenses, according to the Missouri Department of Revenue.

In addition, state law also prohibits scooters from being driven on public thoroughfares that have been designated part of the federal interstate highway system.
