County hopes to receive Homeland Security grant

The Miami County Sheriff's Office hopes to receive more than $9,000 in federal grant money to help pay the salaries of staff members who work on emergency management issues.

Sheriff Frank Kelly asked the Miami County Commission on Wednesday to approve the county's application to participate in the Kansas Emergency Management cooperative agreement for 2008.

The county participated in the agreement last year, Kelly said, and received $9,454 in federal Homeland Security money for its emergency management plan. The money was spent on salaries, Kelly said. He anticipates receiving about the same amount of money, which would, again, be spent on salaries.

The commissioners approved the request and Chairman Jim Wise signed the agreement during the meeting.

Met in executive session, which was closed to the public, to discuss legal issues with David Heger, county counselor. No action was taken when the commissioners returned to open session.
