A weekend out-of-town road trip is going to be anything but a vacation for Kearney's boys soccer team.

For the first time, the Bulldogs will make an appearance in the Parkview Soccer Showdown, which begins Friday night in Springfield.

Coach Bill Forman and his team are looking forward to the challenge.

“It's a great tournament,” Forman said. “It's going to be a nice measuring stick to see where we are early in the season.”

In order to add a third tournament to its schedule, however, Kearney had to drop a pair of quality nonconference opponents in Park Hill and Pembroke Hill. The move shouldn't affect the Bulldogs' strength of schedule, though.

Kearney will open tournament play at 6:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, against Class 3 Neosho. Win or lose in the first round, the Bulldogs will meet either West Plains or Hannibal — two teams that advanced to the Class 2 final four last year — on Saturday morning.

The other side of the bracket includes Class 3 teams Springfield Parkview and Lebanon and Class 2 teams Carthage and Fulton.

The final games of the tournament are set for Saturday afternoon.

This will be Kearney's third and final tournament of the regular season. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 1-2 record at the Liberty Kickoff Classic and won two out of three at last week's Excelsior Springs tournament.
