Back in the Swing Retail Therapy, the signature fundraising event of the non-profit organization Back in the Swing, which supports local breast cancer survivors, celebrates its fifth anniversary from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Hawthorne Plaza, 119th and Roe, where Back in the Swing Retail Therapy began in October 2003.

The celebration will include music by the Dave Stephens Swing Band, food, shopping, a silent auction, door prizes and a KUDL live broadcast with Darcie Blake.

In its fifth year, there is a lot to celebrate as the greater Kansas City community has rallied around Back in the Swing. The event has grown from the participation of this single shopping center of about 40 stores to more than 32 shopping centers and stores and restaurants around town, all totaling more than 800 participating establishments across the greater Kansas City metro area.

Back in the Swing is dedicated to promoting joyful, healthy and proactive living after breast cancer through innovative fund-raising events, inspiring survivorship programs, and clinical research in an academic medical setting.

Ellen Katz, chairman of 2007 Back in the Swing Retail Therapy and Barbara Unell, founder of Back in the Swing, said, “We are thrilled to share this important milestone with all Kansas Citians who have joined with our medical community to positively impact today and tomorrow for breast cancer survivors.”

More than $1 million has been raised by Back in the Swing since 2003 to benefit local breast cancer survivorship programs and research at Cancer Action, The University of Kansas Cancer Center, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, North Kansas City Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, Turning Point and Truman Medical Center
