By Gene Morris, gmorris@miconews.com
Seniors Matt Noblet of Paola, Spring Hill’s Russell Naylor and C.J. Randall of Prairie View have at least one more high school match in their prep wrestling careers.
Noblet, Naylor and Randall were selected to represent Kansas against Missouri in the 16th annual Metro Classic at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
Missouri holds the edge in this series with nine wins to Kansas’ six. However, Kansas is on a streak, having won the past two years.
Noblet is on the Kansas senior all-star roster at 130 pounds. Naylor will wrestle at 135 pounds. Randall is on the lineup at 171 pounds.
For the all-star classic, wrestlers are given a seven-pound leeway. This means if a wrestler weighs 137 pounds, he could compete in the 130-pound class.
Noblet was third in the Class 4A state tournament at 130 pounds. He was 4-1 with a pin and a major decision to move his overall record to 30-4.
It was the second state medal for Noblet, who placed third in the Class 5A state tournament at 119 pounds his freshman year with a 4-1 mark. Noblet was 29-6 for the season.
Noblet could face Missouri’s four-time state champion Colin Pierce, who is one of two wrestlers on the roster at 130 pounds.
Naylor placed third in the state tournament at 140 pounds. He was 4-1 in the tournament for a season record of 41-4.
This is his 11th year of wrestling, starting with the Spring Hill kids’ wrestling program when he was 7.
He topped the 100-victory mark in his prep career this season. Naylor enters the Metro Classic with a record of 117-53.
Naylor was 12-18 his freshman year. He went on to post three consecutive seasons with 30 or more victories: 30-18 as a sophomore, 34-13 last season and 41-4 during his senior campaign.
Naylor could see Tyler Russell from the Missouri squad. Russell is a three-time state qualifier, placing fifth this season and first last year.
Randall was a state runner-up for the Prairie View Buffalos. He was 3-1 at state for an overall record of 44-1. Randall could face Clarence Neeley, a three-time state qualifier, placing second his sophomore year and first this season.
