The Platte County Parks and Recreation Department announced the 2008 Outreach Grant recipients last week, and there are several new projects on the list.

The grant disburses $200,000 annually to fund various park-related projects throughout the county. This year, Northmoor was awarded the greatest amount with more than $45,000.

Mayor Harlan Shaver said the grant would cover more than half the cost for the construction of the city’s first public park area, which will be on a plot of land behind City Hall on Waukomis Drive. The new park will provide playground equipment, a basketball court, restrooms and a gathering shelter.

Shaver said completing the project would give all residents a quality outdoor gathering place but would also provide a place of activity for the area’s younger residents.

“We don’t have any place for kids to go,” Shaver said. “We’re trying to give them a place to spend some time.”

Brian Nowotny, director of parks and recreation, said 29 municipalities and organizations applied to receive a portion of the grant funding this year. He said the Northmoor project stood out because although there was abundant green space within close proximity to the city, up until now there was no park space dedicated specifically to its residents.

“This was a fun one to do,” Nowotny said. “Whenever you can create park amenities in a location for the first time, it’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Nowotny also said that because the new park would be closely positioned to Line Creek, it would be a convenient connection piece for a future extension of the Missouri Riverfront Trail.

The Outreach Grant was created by the county parks department with funds generated through a half-cent sales tax. Since then, Nowotny said the department received a steady number of applicants each year, with the goal of disbursing money as evenly as possible throughout the county.
