Winnetonka to host The Elders
By Ray Weikal
Community members can enjoy some high-octane Irish music and support local high school arts this weekend.
The Elders, a Kansas City-based band, is bringing its brand of up-tempo Celtic rock to Winnetonka High School. The show will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19.
General seating for the show costs $15; reserve seating is $20. For tickets, call 868-5368 or 413-5521, or e-mail drama- mamasandpapas@yahoo.com.
Proceeds from the show will benefit the Winnetonka Drama Mamas and Poppas, which supports the high school’s theater program. The group hopes to use part of the money raised for college scholarships, according to President Wendy Dyck.
“There’s a lot of things that we want to do, but we’ve never had enough money,” she said.
The Elders are a six-piece outfit that’s been playing together for about a decade, according to violinist Brent Hoad. They’ve toured extensively around the world, been broadcast on PBS and garnered critical praise from music journalists like Brian Baker of PASTE Magazine.
“What we’ve got is five Americans who are fans of Irish music and one Irishman who loves American rock and roll,” Hoad said.
The group does have some Northland connections, Hoad said.
Keyboardist Joe Miquelon played saxophone for the Winnetonka High School marching band and was class president in the 1970s.
