LES scientist takes first at county fair

Madison Turner transformed her love for being outside into an award-winning science project at the Miami County Science Fair last week in Osawatomie.

The fourth-grader in Kay Cartwright’s class won first place in the physical science division at the fair, which features top-notch science projects from each elementary school in the county.

“It felt really good,” Madison said of her win.

In her project, Magical Magnifying, Madison tested how quickly magnifying glasses of different diameters burned through different colors of paper.

“Black worked the best because it attracts more heat,” Madison said.

It took her about a day to complete the experiment, and another three or four to complete the project, she said.

“It was really fun because I like being outside, and I like burning things,” Madison said.
