Broadway Bridge project expected to start early June

Construction on Louisburg’s Broadway Bridge is expected to start the first week of June.

The Miami County Commission approved an agreement Wednesday with WCI, Inc. for $413,197.30.

The project will be funded by county sales tax revenue.

While the contractor hopes to have the bridge re-opened by Labor Day as commissioners would like, weather will dictate whether that will happen, county engineer Penny Evans said.

In other business, the commissioners:

Approved the annual noxious weed plan, which must be submitted to the state each year, with a few revisions, including which weeds are bigger problems.

Commissioner George Pretz thanked recently appointed noxious weed supervisor Maurice Ball for his efforts working with landowners to help them eliminate noxious weeds.

Education has been his greatest tool out in the county, Ball said.

“I have yet to be issued a gun or a badge, so I have to go with education,” he joked.

Proclaimed May 11 to 17 as National Police Week in the county, recognizing local law enforcement officers.

Denied a request 4-1 to use the county firing range for the movie “The Last Ounce of Courage.” Commissioner Ron Stiles voted against the motion to reject the request.

Authorized soliciting bids for steel for a bridge on Victory Road south of 319th Street.

Approved a resolution to increase fees for engineering plan reviews and engineering construction inspections.

Approved a resolution to adopt a formula for chip/seal pavement escrow accounts.
