Northland Neighborhoods goes ‘Hollywood’
By Jeffrey M. Salem
Northland Neighborhoods is shifting the entertainment focus of this weekend’s fundraiser from the East Coast to the West Coast.
The NNI Goes Hollywood fundraiser will bring songs from popular movies to attendees through the performances of Andrea Pope and Angelo Cilia, back by popular demand after last year’s successful NNI Goes Broadway fundraiser.
Social time and dinner will precede Pope’s and Cilia’s performance of 18 songs from Hollywood’s favorite movies at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Intrigue Park Place Hotel, 1601 N. Universal Ave. in Kansas City. Tickets are $60 and reservations should be made ahead of time if possible by contacting Northland Neighborhoods at 454-2000.
Jim Rice, Northland Neighborhoods executive director, said the fundraiser is one of two major benefits that help boost Northland Neighborhood funds used for neighborhood services and senior programming, among other services. He said the tickets are high priced compared to the group’s other annual fundraiser — a breakfast in the fall — because it must recoup the costs of producing the event before turning a profit for other programs. Although this is only the second year Northland Neighborhoods has hosted this type of event, Rice said he hopes it will continue for years to come.
“We hope to make it a tradition and go to a different round of music each year,” he said. “We had almost 300 attend last year, and we’re hoping to meet and surpass that this year.”
Pope, who is the director of liturgy and music at Saint Patrick Church, said performing at the Northland Neighborhoods dinner is a nice change from the church music she usually works with.
“It’s a fun outlet to be able to sing some different music and have a different outlet,” she said.
Pope and Cilia have total control of the song list. Songs will be divided into multiple sets with varying themes. They include songs from MGM musicals, Oscar winners and nominees, Broadway musicals-turned-movies and a mixed bag of songs from popular movies, according to Pope.
“I think my own personal favorite is ‘Miss Baltimore Crab’ from ‘Hairspray,’” Pope said.
Pope and Cilia will be joined on stage by a larger band this year. Woodwinds and a brass section will accompany a more traditional band to back up the soloists.
Pope said she expected the songs to knock at nostalgia’s door for audience members, as the songs the duo has chosen are well known.
