Cameron Carr had been waiting for this all season.

Kearney High’s school-record holder in the boys triple jump expected to go even further this spring. It took almost all season, but it finally happened at the Class 3 District 8 track and field championships Saturday, May 10, in Excelsior Springs.

“I got discouraged and frustrated during the season, but now I’m starting to get my mark down,” Carr said. “I finally popped off a couple good ones. It’s good timing. It’s when I needed it the most.

“I wasn’t thinking about records today, though. The main goal is making it to the next meet. That’s the only thing I was thinking about — the next meet.”

Carr and a number of his teammates will take that attitude one more time. Nineteen Bulldogs in all — nine boys and 10 girls — have qualified for the Class 3 Sectional 4 meet Saturday, May 17, in Kearney. The top four finishers in each event will punch their ticket for the state championships the following weekend in Jefferson City.

“What matters is the last three weeks of the year,” Kearney head track coach Jeff Roberts said. “It didn’t really matter what happened between the start of the season and the first of May. It’s what you do at districts, sectionals and state that really matters. We’ve got one step down and two more to go.”

Coming off a memorable district performance, Carr will be looking to build off one of the best days of his high school career. After clearing 6 feet in the high jump for the first time ever, he went on to break his own school record in the triple jump on two separate occasions. His final leap of the competition measured in at 45-8 1/4, smashing the old record of 45-0 and giving him the district title in the event.

“I’m pretty happy to say the least,” Carr said. “I was excited to get over 6-foot in the high jump, and I think my adrenaline carried over to triple jump. It feels great.”

Carr, who is looking for a second straight trip to state in the triple jump, will be only one of eight district champions for the Bulldogs competing this weekend in Kearney. Dalton Moberly scored a double by winning both the boys 1,600 and 3,200 races.

On the girls side, Ariel Dunn (400), Brooke Buerky (1,600) and Marissa Moberly (3,200) come off district wins. All four Kearney girls relays will be favorites to move on, including a 1,600 team that appears to be coming on strong, and the defending state runner-up 3,200 team.
