Track Notebook: Throwers provide boost
By Chris Geinosky
On a day when the Bulldogs had their struggles at various events around the track, one surprising exception came from an unheralded throwing crew that had to compete through cold, windy conditions.
Kearney High had a finalist in each of the four throwing events, scored team points in three and had one thrower extend his season at the Class 3 District 8 meet Saturday, May 10, in Excelsior Springs.
“I don’t know what it is about us and this bad weather,” Kearney throwing coach Josh Gray said. “It seems like we’ve had some of our best days in this nasty stuff.”
Leading the way as he has most of the season for the Bulldog throwers, Tyler Trout finished second in the boys discus with a mark of 148 feet, 1 inch — a new personal record. Last year, Trout missed out on advancing by a few inches, but that wasn’t going to happen this time around.
“It feels incredible to throw my best today,” Trout said. “This is the meet to do it at. I finally put it all together.”
Trout will compete in sectionals this weekend in Kearney. If he can come close to matching his new lifetime-best, he should be in the hunt for a state-qualifying spot.
“He did the work in the offseason,” Gray said. “The things he’s done in the weight room have made him so much more powerful. The work he’s done in the preparation for this is paying off.”
Blake Thomas came up short of qualifying for sectionals, but he did score important team points for the Kearney boys by placing sixth in the discus and seventh in the shot put. The Paris sisters — senior Michala and freshman Addie — contributed to the Kearney girls run to the district team title by taking sixth and seventh, respectively, in the shot put.
