By the end of the first inning it was over, but after only three batters the Bulldogs — and Jake Hai — had all the offense they needed.

A six-run, first-inning rally turned out to be the only offense of the game in Kearney High’s 6-0 victory against Maryville in the first round of the Class 3 District 16 baseball tournament Saturday, May 10, at Phil Welch Stadium in St. Joseph. Hai took care of the rest.

“Jake Hai pitched an absolute great game,” Kearney coach Jeff Parks said. “He got into a couple jams, but he got out of it each time.”

The Spoofhounds rapped out eight hits in six innings against Hai, but only three runners reached as far as third base in the game. Maryville stranded nine runners on base.

Kearney sent 11 batters to the plate in the game-determining first inning. Senior shortstop Tanner Funk had three hits in the victory, including an RBI single that opened the scoring.

All four of the district’s top seeds advanced to the semifinals, but it didn’t come easy for No. 1 St. Joseph Benton. The Cardinals needed a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 6-5 come-from-behind win against No. 8 Smithville.
