At 22, Tyler Chiarelli’s music has taken him to Los Angeles, and he’ll soon venture to New York to intern with a recording studio whose manager wants him to work with Grammy Award winner John Mayer.

But as big as that sounds, the 2004 Liberty High School graduate and Liberty resident is just as excited about performing with one of his bands, Johnny Five and the Freeloaders, this Saturday, May 17, at a tailgate party and silent auction that’s being held in anticipation of the main American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event planned for July.

The tailgate party will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the southwest corner of Lowe’s parking lot. The public is invited at no charge.

Johnny Five also includes lead singer and front man John Goolsby, bass player Andy West, lead guitarist Brandon Paddock and drummer Justin Amos.

Chiarelli’s musical endeavors are varied, though each one is as impressive as the other. He and his friends enjoy their Johnny Five and the Freeloader gigs, which help them “pay for gas money,” though they’re donating their time to the Relay For Life Tailgate Party.

He also plays in a band called Autumn of Repair. The same band members play under the name Steve Jones when they perform worship songs. The group met at their church, Vineyard Church in Smithville.

He and his friend, Brandon Paddock, run Covenant Recording Studios in Kansas City North, where owner Jim Wagy, has been “amazing,” he said, in the year-old venture. They’ve had 10 to 15 clients in their first year, including Jimmy Allen from Puddle of Mud, Nate LaHaie from Chasing 7, and Josephine Collective, which just signed with Warner Brothers.

Some of Chiarelli’s big-name music relationships have come rather serendipitously. His opportunity to work with John Mayer came when Chiarelli was selling a guitar amplifier on eBay. The manager of Avatar Recording Studios in New York, where Mayer holds sessions, lost the bid, but he and Chiarelli continued corresponding.

“We became good buddies, and now we talk a couple of times a month,” Chiarelli said.

Chairelli works at Mass Street Music in Lawrence, Kan., but when he formerly worked at Seuf’s Guitar Repair, he met Allen from Puddle of Mud. Chiarelli has developed quite a name for himself as a guitar technician, and when Allen has been in Los Angeles, he’s sent his Gibson Les Pauls to Chiarelli to repair.

“I’m a total gear nut,” he said. “He’s flown me to L.A. to be his personal guitar technician. I’ve just been really blessed through all this.”

Chiarelli’s dad, Phil Chiarelli, is a guitarist, and he said both parents have been supportive of his music career.

“My dad was really good at teaching me the basics, and then watching him tour and seeing his band helped, too,” said Chiarelli, who also plays the drums. “I played along to a ton of albums late at night until my parents ask me to turn my amp off.”

Tailgate party

The Relay For Life of Liberty planning committee will host a special Tailgate Party and Silent Auction from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, in the southwest corner of Lowe’s parking lot in Liberty.

The event, which will feature Johnny Five and the Freeloaders, will help kick off the main Relay For Life event that will be held in July at Liberty High School. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event to support cancer research, patient services, education and government advocacy across the nation.

The community is encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to the Tailgate Party (no alcohol, please) to enjoy entertainment and the silent auction, which will include a leather jacket signed by NASCAR legend Rusty Wallace, a photo T-shirt signed by “American Idol” singer David Cook, a variety of auction baskets, furniture and other items.

Smokin’ Guns BBQ & Catering will provide barbecue at a nominal charge. In the spirit of this year’s Relay theme, NASCURE – Racing For a Cure, area racer Ed “Bubba” Kline will display his newly finished B-Modified car.
