City zoning changes to go before county commissioners again
The Miami County Commission will revisit changes to the city of Paola’s Land Development Ordinance today.
The city and county’s interlocal agreement requires that the county commissioners approve changes that affect the growth area.
One of the two changes, which addresses trees near city streets, does not apply to the growth area, but the other, which would allow all industrial uses in the estate district with a conditional-use permit, would.
The commissioners tabled the changes April 30 with concerns about whether county-owned roads in the affected areas of the growth area could sustain industrial traffic.
Paola City Planner Justin Givens said he had received requests for industrial-type uses from both property owners and potential buyers.
Industrial-type uses are prohibited in the county’s countrywide zoning district, which has similar characteristics as the city’s estate district, because of road concerns, said Shane Krull, county administrator.
If the commissioners vote against the regulations, the city will have to take a second look.
