Students learn the art of crafting a story
Spring Hill authors attend conference at PSU, meet children’s author
Putting words down on paper isn’t always easy, and for eight Spring Hill Elementary students, learning the art of crafting an engaging story became more than just an assignment but a pursuit to write the best one.
In April, those students were invited to attend a special Young Authors Conference at Pittsburg State University. Students not only had the opportunity to meet children’s author Eric Kimmel but also to share the stories they had written with other young authors.
Earlier this year, students were asked to write a story and participate in a school-wide writing contest. Nearly 40 of the school’s first- and second-graders chose to participate, knowing that only eight students would be able to attend the conference.
After several weeks, students submitted their stories for judging. The initial cut narrowed the field down to 14. From there, those 14 students continued to refine their stories, adding illustrations as well as trying to make them more captivating. In the end, only eight students attended the conference. Students who attended the conference were Miah Langley, Ashley Croan, Lauren Wilson, Connor Bush, Alex Denning, Amber Miller, Spencer Updike and Jaiden Waddle.
