Of all the qualities that a playwright can strive for, “charm” is certainly one of the most elusive. If the writer is successful, the ball is frequently dropped in performance. Sometimes the director aims for laughs instead of the truth. Sometimes actors work too hard and burden the piece with heavy emoting or gag-oriented mugging.
