Fred Bodker, a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Shalom, will be installed as congregational president June 1 at the synagogue, 14200 Lamar Ave., Overland Park.

New officers and board members also will be installed. Officers are Jeff Katz, education vice president; Mike Abrams, religious affairs vice president; Kurt Kavanaugh, secretary; and Rita Cortes, treasurer. 2008-11 board members are Cortes, Milisa Flekier, Stacy Hollander, Norman Kahn Jr., Michael Rogovein, Vivian Schlozman, Richard Simon and Joe Zwillenberg. 2008-10 board members are Mirra Klausner and Stephen Kort; 2008-09 member is Cindy Daniels.

Bodker grew up attending Beth Shalom’s nursery and religious schools, and he celebrated his bar mitzvah and confirmation at the synagogue. His goals during his term as president include working to ensure a smooth transition for the new senior rabbi and strengthening the lay leadership.

After graduating from the University of Michigan with honors in 1986, Bodker received a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Following internship at Northwestern University School of Medicine and residency in ophthalmology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, he completed a fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery. He entered private practice in 1995 with the Kansas City Eye Clinic.

Bodker has held several offices at Beth Shalom, including being a member of the first class of the Helzberg Institute for Jewish Communal Leadership in 1999-2001. Bodker said the Institute taught him the importance of philanthropy and the pluralistic nature of Judaism, and reinforced his Jewish values and ethics.

Bodker said the involvement of his parents, Beverly and Harvey Bodker, in community and synagogue leadership has inspired him.

Bodker and his wife, Cindy, have three daughters: Ilana, 14, Mallory, 12, and Ellie, 9.

Bodker represents the fifth generation in his family active in the 130-year-old synagogue.

Members of the community are invited to attend the installation brunch at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, June 1 at the Lamar campus. For more information, call the synagogue office at 647-7279.
