Blue Valley West rolls to regional golf crown

Blue Valley West continued its dominance in boys high school golf by winning the Class 6A regional Monday at Heritage Park in Olathe.
The East Kansas League champions had a score of 298 in capturing the regional title.
Shawnee Mission East and BV North tied for second with a score of 308 with the Lancers second because of the tie-breaker.
The top three teams plus the top five golfers not on a qualifying team will make the trek to Shadow Glen in Olathe for the 6A state tournament Monday.
BV North sophomore Harry Higgs grabbed medalist honors with a two-under par 70 round.
Leading the way for the Jaguars was junior Curtis Yonke in second place with a 73.
BV West had its scoring golfers in the top seven places. Senior Curtis Boden came in fourth at 74, senior Korbin Kuehn claimed sixth with a 75 and senior Mitch Carlson placed seventh with a round of 76.
BV North sophomore Jeff Lee finished third, losing the playoff to Yonke.
Blue Valley sophomore Michael Fisher shot a round of 75 to place fifth.
Leading the way for SM East were seniors Scott Willman and Tommy Kennedy. Willman placed eighth at 76 and Kennedy ninth at 77.

SM Northwest qualified two golfers for the 6A state tournament out of the 6A regional in Lawrence.
The two Cougars golfers going to state are Brett Dowell and Scott Fruehling.

St. Thomas Aquinas easily won the 5A regional held at Sunflower Hills in Kansas City, Kan., and hosted by Bishop Miege.
The Saints had a score of 313 to beat second-place Pittsburg by 28 strokes.
Bishop Miege had a score of 346 and to qualify for the 5A state tournament in Monday in McPherson with the Stags’ third-place finish.
Aquinas senior Jimmy Clifford captured medalist honors with a round of 75. The Saints had their four scoring players in the top five places.
The top finisher for the Stags was Brian LeSage in seventh with a round of 84.

St. James Academy has one state qualifier out of the 4A regional in Atchison.
The qualifier is Tyler Fortney with a round of 89 that qualifies him for the 4A state tournament Monday in Manhattan.
