In the near future, Nathan and Lindsay Black will become the community’s newest residents.

The couple, who currently live in Kansas, plan to move to Raytown within the next 12 months.

“It has a nice small town suburban feel,” Nathan, who works for Sprint, said. “We absolutely love it.”

Both Nathan and Lindsay grew up in small towns.

The couple has already had more than a glimpse of the community, having participated in several service projects in Raytown along with a group of residents seeking to set down spiritual roots.

“We’re working on a church plant,” he said. “We want to be able to join in and do more.”

Black said they would soon have that opportunity as the group is planning a series of 15 weekly service projects this summer.

He also knows the city has numerous other opportunities, including for young people, who are growing in number.

“It’s exciting to see what is happening,” he said. “This was for a longtime considered to be an older community and now that is all turning around.”

Mayor David Bower sees the excitement building for the Blacks and others and knows there is an opportunity to make a difference.

“What’s happening in Raytown has yet to be defined,” he said. “With the young people who are coming here, who knows where we’re going to be in five years, in 10 years.”

Bower also sees the potential for the downtown area, where young people have taken an active leadership role in redevelopment efforts, to become a major draw.

“We’re going to have an enlivened downtown,” he said. “Hopefully, many people will be able to work and shop there. I can also see many residents living within walking distance of downtown.

“It’s so easy to imagine.”
