Marvin R. Barden, 90, Osawatomie, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the Life Care Center in Osawatomie.

He was born Feb. 5, 1918, in Miami County to James Fred and Eva May Surber Barden.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1940 and was discharged in 1945 after serving in the 127th Field Artillery Battalion in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe.

On Dec. 4, 1945, he married Etta Lee Pope in Kansas City, Kan., where they lived until moving to Osawatomie in 1986. He was a butcher with the Milgram’s Food Store for many years before retiring.

He was a lifetime member of the Paola VFW and meat cutters union USCW.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta, in 1994; four sisters, Winifred Osmon, Mildred Marvin, Donna Jean Davis, and Velma Betcher; and a brother, Fred Barden.

A survivor is a sister, Helen Rhodes of Osawatomie.
