Organizers seek funds for Freedom Fest
By Kristen Waggener, kwaggener@miconews.com
They haven’t hit their goal yet, but the organizing committee for Louisburg’s annual Fourth of July celebration is well on its way to raising the $7,000 needed to put on this year’s celebration.
Organizer Collyn Peterson said even though the group lost its largest corporate sponsor this year, other large companies and local businesses have stepped up to help fund the event.
“Fund-raising has picked up a little bit,” Peterson said. “We’re very appreciative of that to the business community.”
Highlights of this year’s event include the Middle Creek Theatre Band and Singers, as well as activities and food for the general public. One of the new events planned for this year is a kiddie tractor pull for children age 6 through 12, sponsored by the Louisburg American Legion John P. Hand Post No. 250.
Other events include tattoos for children, sponsored by the Louisburg Chamber of Commerce; watermelon giveaways, sponsored by the Louisburg Lions Club; and a drawing, sponsored by the Lions Club, for reconditioned bicycles.
Peterson said there will be an apple pie contest again this year, sponsored by Kansas Sen. Pat Apple, with proceeds benefitting the Friends of the Louisburg Library.
Three food booths featuring barbecue, hot dogs, ice cream and nachos will make their appearance, as well as inflatable games.
Activities start at 6 p.m., Peterson said, with fireworks shot off by Louisburg firefighters at dark, which is usually between 9 and 9:30 p.m.
Organizers for the event are still looking for businesses and groups to sponsor booths with games and activities, as well as donate to the general fund.
Call the Chamber, 837-2826, for more information about sponsoring a booth.
Donations can be sent to: Freedom Fund, City of Louisburg, 5 S. Peoria St., Louisburg, KS 66053.
