The 15th-annual Miami County Relay for Life will celebrate cancer survivors and raise money to fight the disease at 6 p.m. June 13 at Osawatomie High School’s Lynn Dickey Field.

Cancer survivors are invited to walk in the Cancer Survivor Lap — the opening lap of the Relay for Life — and they will receive a special Cancer Survivor Relay for Life T-shirt as well as special recognition throughout the opening ceremony.

“The Miami County Relay For Life raises approximately $50,000 each year to support the research and patient support services made possible through ACS,” Susan Gorman, chairwoman for the Miami County American Cancer Society Relay For Life, said in an e-mail. “The luminaria ceremony at Relay is also a special time to honor those in Miami County who are cancer survivors and caretakers as well as remember those who have lost the fight with cancer.”

Barb Fisher, accounting chairperson, said 27 teams have signed up for the relay, exceeding the Miami County Relay for Life committee’s goal of 25 teams.

“It’s been challenging with having a smaller committee this year, but we’ve pulled together, and it’s going to be nice for the survivors and families and their caretakers,” Fisher said. “Our teams are up, and I think our luminaria sales are going to be up in comparison to the past.”

Before the relay, there will be a Survivor’s Dinner and Reception at 5 p.m. in the Osawatomie High School commons.

A quilt made by Lori Fennern consisting of patches from past relay T-shirts will be auctioned off live at 8:45 p.m. in the commons to help raise additional money for cancer research. Gorman said the ribbons on the quilt represent different types of cancer, and one patch on the quilt explains each ribbon’s meaning.

“It really turns out to be an awesome quilt,” Fisher said.

In addition, a mini University of Kansas basketball autographed by the senior men of the championship team will be auctioned off.

“We’re real excited because we have 27 teams, and we hope we set a record for our total raise or top our last year’s raise,” Gorman said.

Other special events will be held during the walk including music and entertainment provided by the Silver Bullet Band and square dancers.

If you are a cancer survivor and would like to be a part of the opening lap, call Cheryl Manning at 294-4212 or the American Cancer Society office at (913) 747-6022. The event will conclude at 6 a.m. June 14.
