Your Crowning Glory now open
By Ashley Vasquez
For Julie Sargent, opening her own hair salon meant bringing all of her talents together with her vision of an elegant and intimate setting.
Your Crowning Glory family hair styling salon is in the Smithville Plaza shopping area at 111A U.S. Highway 169 in Smithville. The business opened its doors at the end of March.
Sargent, who began hair styling in 1982, said her new salon offered personalized haircuts, color, perms, facial waxing, in addition to other services.
“My vision for this salon was to be very intimate and a place where people can come to feel relaxed and get very personalized service,” she said. “My goal is to help my customers look good, feel good and be good.”
The name for the business, Your Crowning Glory, came from an article Sargent read several years ago and her faith.
“I read an article where a mother said that her daughter’s hair was her crowning glory,” she said. “I always loved that because our hair means a lot to us and it is also a term that is used in the Bible, which goes with my faith.”
Sargent, who lives near Gladstone, has worked in a variety of salons including locations in Smithville over the years. Most recently, she performed hair styling from her home while she was raising her children.
“I told her that if she built this, they will come,” said her husband, Rick Sargent. “I am so proud of her.”
The salon, which is located in a former wireless phone company store, underwent a total renovation when the Sargents leased it.
“We re-did about everything from the walls to the tile floors,” Julie Sargent said. “It looks really nice and inviting now.”
Sargent said she built the salon to fit her likings but also built in room to expand in the future.
“There is room for massage services and for nails in the future,” she said. “I would like to stay small because that is part of my mission of the setting but I would like to add some additional services down the road.”
Also at the salon, Sargent sells her handmade jewelry, handmade soaps and provides lessons and tips for raising African violets — her specialty.
“I would love to see an African violet club open up in the Northland,” she said. “I love them and I would love to see other people get into it.”
Sargent said she chose the Smithville location for its people and visibility. The business also sponsors a racecar driven by a Smithville driver that is featured at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.
“This is a growing community, and I am excited to be a part of it,” she said. “We have a great location here and I hope people can come on by and visit. I take walk-ins and appointments.”
