This is the fourth article in a series about businesses in Smithville that are important parts of the community but may not receive as much recognition as others for their services. The Herald recently sat down with Todd Eggers, co-owner of Shoreline Boat & RV Repair, to learn about the business.

Q: What is your primary business function?

A: We repair boats and RVs. With boats, we do anything except engine work and with RVs we do collision work and other light repair work. We specialize in fiberglass repair as well. Repairing fiberglass isn’t that difficult but the gel coating is what is hard. That coating is important because it really affects how nice your boat looks. It is essentially the paint job.

Q: Who are your main customers?

A: Our customers are all across the board. We have older people that have RVs to fishermen and families.

Q: What makes your business special?

A: We are a niche business. We have customers from all over Greater Kansas City, but we also have people that come from Des Moines, Iowa, and Omaha, Neb., and as far west as Topeka, Kan.. There are very few businesses that specialize in what we do.

Q: Why did you start this business?

A: My wife’s family sold their body shops in 1998, and we saw an opening in this particular market and decided to open this business. We opened another store in Tulsa, Okla., one year ago.

Q: Why did you choose Smithville for your home base?

A: We had a body shop here in Smithville and wanted to continue to do business here. We really enjoy the Smithville area, and we felt comfortable continuing to have our business here.

Q: Why should people complete routine maintenance on their boats or RVs?

A: For a few hundred dollars each year, you can really keep your boat or RV in good shape and looking nice. It is really important for the value and for the long-term life.

Q: How is the boating and RV industry changing?

A: We are seeing more and more people interested in RVs for their families and for people who are retired. The boating industry has slowed down because of the economy, but I think it will come back. People are camping more and more and enjoying lakes such as Smithville Lake.

Q: What’s in store for the future of Shoreline Boat & RV Repair?

A: We want to stay here and maybe even open another store somewhere else like Tulsa down the road. We really like Smithville and try to shop here and do our business here. It is a great community to be in.
