Business Investment A Boon For City
Editorial
By Dustin Kass, dustinkass@miconews.com
The news that Phoenix Fabrication of Kansas City, Kan., has rented the buildings at 820 Sixth St. is a much-needed economic positive for Osawatomie.
The company was looking to expand from its current facility in Kansas City, and through the efforts of county and city officials, its gaze soon found the buildings that had, quite frankly, been an eyesore in town for quite some time — a condition that’s already being reversed with the first, most-basic work going on the site.
With the prospect of the creation of at least 30 new jobs and whispers of further expansion down the road if the business continues to be successful, the economic effects of the facility will undoubtedly be felt throughout town. The facility will give residents another in-town option for employment, an attractive prospect to those who head north on U.S. Highway 169 each day to their jobs as well as to those already working in Osawatomie.
Phoenix’s impacts will reach even further, however. With a new source of money being poured into the community and with a larger employment base staying in the city and county, a number of corollary businesses throughout the area will also reap the benefits of keeping residents at home.
The recruitment of a Kansas City business to town is truly “a win for Osawatomie,” in the words of Janet McRae, county economic director, and hopefully the first of many more to come.
