Smithville’s Hot Summer Nights free concert series will kick off next month with themed events, live bands and other activities.

The concert series will be from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Fridays, Aug. 1, 8, 15 and 22, at the Courtyard Square in downtown Smithville.

The Hot Summer Nights committee has been in the planning stages for several months and said it was excited to bring back this community event in 2008.

“Hot Summer Nights is a really fun event for everyone in the family,” said Renee Schneller, committee member.

Each night of the four-night event will highlight a variety of activities including music, kids activities, concessions, prizes and more.

On Friday, Aug. 1, Emergency Vehicle Night will be the theme. Vehicles from police, fire, ambulance and the Missouri Highway Patrol will be on hand. Platte Valley Bank and Pepsi will be the sponsors of this night and will provide free hot dogs, chips and soda. Area band “Exit 47” and dancers from Shoot for the Stars will perform at the event. Also, the Highway Patrol will provide a rollover car accident simulation machine to help with seat belt and safety awareness, Schneller said.

Warrior Pride Night, a new event, will be highlighted Friday, Aug. 8. Big V Countrymart and Blue Bunny will be sponsoring this night, and local band Exit 47 will perform. The Smithville High School band will also perform, and people are encouraged to wear their Warrior Pride clothing or green and white.

“We thought it would be a lot of fun to recognize the students and show our Smithville support on one night,” said committee member Martie Peters.

A patriotic theme will be the focus of the third Hot Summer Nights Friday, Aug. 15. People are encouraged to wear red, white and blue, and motorcycles will be showcased. Cycle enthusiasts will have a chance to show off their bikes and impress the visitors with their riding skills. The Yard Dogs and Dance Progression teams will perform. Huntley Disposal is the sponsor of this night’s events.

The final Hot Summer Nights will be Friday, Aug. 22, with a classic car event. Classic car owners are expected to display their vehicles throughout the downtown. Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders will be the featured band.

Todd Justice will be master of ceremonies at each event, and vendor food booths will be featured from Kiwanis and Brodie’s Backyard BBQ.

The event committee reminds patrons not to use Silly String during the event because it violates city ordinances on littering, and violators will receive citations. Also, parents should watch children closely because the streets will not be closed for at least the first three events because of the Missouri Highway 92 detour onto Missouri Route DD, which is also Main Street.

Volunteers are still needed, and donations are being accepted for the event. For more information, call Schneller at 532-8525.
