Power-regulating device that could cut energy costs available at three Kearney companies

“Going green” and “energy efficient” are buzz phrases with the continuing increase in energy costs.

Among the solutions to rising energy costs now may be the PowerwoRx e3, a product by EcoQuest.

The device is supposed to reduce the amount of power used in a house or business — and there are dealers in Kearney who sell it.

The system hooks up to the breaker box and is designed to reduce the power factor.

“I’m eager about the product, but I want to make sure it works,” said George Houser, a master electrician in Kearney.

Houser explained that houses and buildings have energy “spikes” throughout the day.

“A spike is an abrupt increase on voltage or current,” Houser said.

That’s extra energy that isn’t used efficiently but is paid for. The energy spikes can also damage equipment like televisions and computers over time. The PowerwoRx e3 is designed to control those spikes so that all energy paid for is well used. Houser said by regulating that, some of those electronics can run cooler, ultimately lasting longer.

Houser said the device also provides harmonic filtration. Line noise causes damage to electronics, according to a news release from EcoQuest. A brochure from EcoQuest states that the “hum” of a florescent lamp or “snow” on a TV produces a weak signal. The noise can damage switching power supplies, causing premature failure, according to EcoQuest.

Houser said the PowerwoRx e3 will likely have a greater impact on businesses or houses with a lot of square footage. He said the more space and more electronics drawing energy, the higher the savings. Small homes may not see enough cost savings to justify buying the energy-regulating process, Houser said.

The PowerwoRx e3 comes at a cost — about $600 for a home. And a master electrician, like Houser, typically charges less than $100 for installation. It must be installed in the breaker box by a master electrician.
