The Louisburg volleyball team rode a wave of momentum all the way to two victories during their home opener against Waverly and Wellsville on Tuesday.

After struggling a year ago, the Wildcats showed quickly they aren’t the same team and didn’t lose a game in the 25-13, 25-21 win over Waverly and a 25-22 and 25-10 victory over Wellsville.

“Overall, I really think the girls played pretty well,” coach Jessica Smith said. “The first game against Waverly we were making first-game mistakes here and there, but that is understandable, and we got through it. We were down, and we got back up and the girls didn’t quit.”

The best example of that no-quit attitude was in the team’s final match against Wellsville. Louisburg trailed 22-16 in the first game, but senior Chelsea Morland served nine straight points and Louisburg got big kills from junior Taylor Brown to finish on a 9-0 run for the win.

The Wildcats were fired up in the second game, and the Eagles didn’t stand much of a chance. Louisburg opened the game on a 19-5 run and never looked back.

“It is a good sign to see that we can dig deep and we don’t get down on ourselves,” Smith said. “We were able to keep the momentum and didn’t really let up, and that was good to see.”

Brown led the Wildcats with eight kills against Wellsville, while Cassie O’Brien and Laurel Dixon added four and three kills, respectively. O’Brien led the team with four blocks, and Morland finished with three. Junior setter Jordan Shearer also had a good match with 15 assists.

Against Waverly, Morland and Brown led the team with six kills apiece, and each also added three aces to the cause. Morgan Adams and O’Brien finished with five kills.

Shearer led the team once again with 16 assists and added two aces, as did Dixon.

“I think these two wins will give us a lot of confidence,” Smith said. “We have about a week and a half to work on things before we play again, so we will have some time to get some things worked out. There is still a long way to go yet, but I feel really good about this team and what they can do.”

The Wildcats return to action Thursday when they travel to Iola for a triangular.
