A commemorative caravan that plans to trace the path of the 1838 Potawatomi Trail of Death will make stops in Miami County this weekend.

The caravan will follow the path dozens of Potawatomi Indians took during their forced relocation from Indiana to eastern Kansas, near present-day Osawatomie.

The trail spans about 660 miles, and several people, mostly children, died during the relocation because of typhoid fever and the stress of the move.

The Trail of Death commemorative caravan, which travels the route every five years, began Monday and will last through Sunday. This year’s caravan marks the 170th anniversary.

Caravan participants will be in Miami County on Saturday. Participants will have lunch at about noon at Beethoven’s No. 9 in Paola and then follow the trail through Osawatomie to Sugar Creek Mission in St. Philippine Duchesne Memorial Park in Linn County later that afternoon.

Anyone interested in traveling on the caravan should call or e-mail George Godfrey at (217) 636-8120 or pggg-92@sbcglobal.net or Shirley Willard at (574) 223-2352 or

wwillard@rtcol.com.

The Cherokee Trail of Tears from the Smoky Mountains to Oklahoma also took place in 1838, but the Cherokees had more deaths. There were 15,000 Cherokees who started west, and about 4,000 died.
