Local cowgirls, cowboys set to ride, rope at Kemper
American Royal offers educational school group tours at rodeo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Twenty-nine local cowgirls and cowboys have qualified for the 2008 American Royal Invitational Youth Rodeo.
The contestants will be riding and roping under the bright lights of Kemper Arena from Oct. 17 to Oct. 23.
Area junior division competitors are Timber Allenbrand, Paola; Billy Lane Barcus, Paola; Michael Boehm, Paola; Brady Burson, Lane; Brylen Dees, Paola; Marcella Dees, Paola; Taylor Donldson, Louisburg; Dawson Dreyer, Paola; Connor Gentry, Pleasanton; Hannah Holland, Bucyrus; Jake Joeckel, Paola; T.J. McKiearnan, La Cygne; Kristin Simmons, Mound City; Shelby Whiting, Paola; Logan Wiseman, Paola; Paige Wiseman, Paola; Collin Wiswell, Paola; and Caitlyn Wiswell, Paola. Braven Bennett of Spring Hill is an alternate.
Senior division competitors are Tyler Dees, Paola; Rebecca Garcia, Louisburg; Jacoby Hotsenpiller, Louisburg; Tanner Rankin, Paola; Cody Remington, Paola; Cole Remington, Paola; Megan Simons, Mound City; and Drew Smith, Paola. Elli Ouellette of Rantoul is an alternate.
Schools are invited to take part in a hands-on learning experience with the 2008 American Royal Educational Tours. The tours are $5 per student. For more information about school tours and dates, go to www.american

This year’s tour features the animals in the ADM World of Agriculture, the Mobile Dairy Classroom, learning the way of the cowboy in the Code of the West presentation and, of course, the wild riding action of the rodeo.
Suggested grade levels for the tours is fourth grade and above.
The World of Energy tour is Oct. 17. Students will explore many forms of energy and how they can conserve it from solar to nuclear. They will be able to see the Mizzou Hydrogen Car Team, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.
The Mobile Dairy Classroom will be open October 20-24. The classroom is a brand new part of the American Royal School Tours program. The 26-foot mobile unit features fully operational milking parlors complete with a live cow.
Rodeo University will be held from Oct. 20-24. At Rodeo University, students get the chance to see horses and cattle used in rodeo, watch riding demonstrations, learn fun rodeo facts and have a picture taken with a live bull.
Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey will also be performing Oct. 20-24. Whiplash is an 18-year-old Capuchin monkey who has been riding since he was 2 years old. He travels the country herding wild Barbados sheep at rodeos and special events.
The Petting Zoo will be open from Oct. 20-24. The zoo offers a chance to see not only farm animals, but also get up close to exotic animals such as camels, giraffes and zebras.
