A Crowning Night For Buffs?
Power Play
By David Wolman
Usually, a high school’s fall homecoming king and queen are announced at halftime of a football game midway through the season. Prairie View will hold its coronation about 30 minutes before Friday’s game against Jayhawk-Linn kicks off.
Given that Prairie View is one win away from wrapping up the inaugural Pioneer League title, that might have been one of the smartest moves, of many, made by the school’s homecoming committee. The queen since will have at least 20 minutes to get comfortable on their sofa or chairs, or whatever the school provides for her, to relax, put her feet up, enjoy some snacks and the game just a few feet away from the sidelines and watch the Buffalos try to add another line to their banner inside the school’s gymnasium. The homecoming king will have a brief moment to enjoy since all four candidates — Nathan Sommer, Bronson Moylan, Bryce Green and Devon Minckley — will be playing in the football game.
All Prairie View has to do to earn the title is defeat Jayhawk-Linn. If the Buffalos lose to the Jayhawks, they will have to defeat Osawatomie in their Oct. 23 regular-season finale in La Cygne.
Prairie View gave itself an opportunity to clinch the league title following a thrilling 41-35 win over Central Heights on Friday in Richmond.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Prairie View football coach Murray Zogg certainly doesn’t want to.
“All we are worried about right now is beating Jayhawk for our homecoming,” Zogg said. “The rest does not matter until we beat Jayhawk-Linn.”
If Prairie View defeats Jayhawk-Linn, it will go into district play at 5-1. A win would also ensure a second straight winning season for the Buffalos.
Prairie View can’t afford to take Jayhawk-Linn (0-5) lightly.
Anderson County came into last Friday’s game against Jayhawk-Linn leading the Pioneer League in total offense. The Jayhawks yielded just 198 total yards in a 7-0 loss to the Bulldogs.
Prairie View would like to continue its high-scoring ways against Jayhawk-Linn. Prairie View has been downright offensive, pardon the expression, the last three games. The Buffalos have averaged 387 yards and 41 points per game over that span.
A win for the Buffalos would allow them to be the final ones crowned on an evening full of festivities.
