JV girls light up scoreboard
Louisburg off to 8-1 start thanks to loads of offense
The Louisburg junior varsity girls’ basketball team has put up some impressive numbers to say the least to start the 2012 season. It was no more evident than during the Lady Cats’ four-team tournament at Prairie View on Saturday. Louisburg had no problems as it ran away with first-place as it defeated Osawatomie 71-13 in the opening game and crushed Prairie View 90-20.Those two wins pushed the Lady Cats’ record to 8-1 on the season. They have won several of their games by double digits.“The tournament was great,” Louisburg coach Jason Nelson said. “Our girls played their best ‘team games’ of the year. We pushed the ball in transition, created high percentage shots, played great defense and rebounded really well.”Louisburg’s 161 combined points in those two games were the most any team in the program has scored in back-to-back games in several years, if ever.Against Osawatomie, sophomore Savannah Mitchell outscored the Trojans by herself with a team-high 14 points, and freshman Bailey Dvorak also scored in double figures with 10. Kacie Geiman added nine points, and Shelby Whiting scored eight in the win.Sophomore Nicole Hopkins was one of four Lady Cats to score in double figures in the win over Prairie View as she had 13. Geiman, Mitchell and sophomore Brecken Sigg each scored 12 points.Dvorak and fellow freshman Kirstin Lowry each scored nine and eight points, respectively. In its two previous Frontier League games, the Lady Cats picked up a 36-23 road win on Jan. 18 and later defeated De Soto 57-24 on Jan. 13.“I couldn’t be more pleased with our program,” Nelson said. “In addition to their existing talent, our girls want to get better. They listen to coaching and implement schemes and techniques and consistently strive to do well with both the physical and mental aspects of the game. They have so much potential moving forward, both as individuals, and a unit, and it will be fun to watch them grow.”
