'Crossing Delancey,' 'Greater Tuna' charming, funny
Of all the qualities that a playwright can strive for, “charm” is certainly one of the most elusive. If the writer is successful, the ball is frequently dropped in performance. Sometimes the director aims for laughs instead of the truth. Sometimes actors work too hard and burden the piece with heavy emoting or gag-oriented mugging.
Fortunately, Olathe Community Theatre’s production of Susan Sandler’s comedy “Crossing Delancey” avoids most of these pitfalls. This lighthearted romance achieves a delicate balance between the sweet and the sappy.
Set in Manhattan in the late 1980s, “Crossing Delancey” tells the gentle story of a young Jewish woman named Isabelle (Linda Wells) who yearns for independence and the modern ideal of romance.
Middle-school gamers unite for club

Legislature smoked by coal
Ugly. That is the word that comes to mind in describing the 2008 Kansas Legislature. From the outset in January to the coming of spring, legislators were mired in controversy, among themselves and with Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, over two proposed 700-megawatt coal-fired electric plants in southwest Kansas. The contentious debate, in the corridors and on the floors of both chambers, dominated the proceedings and choked out other deserving issues.
